How To Get More Done And Minimize Distractions

Increasing your productivity doesn’t take a magic wand or require you to get an advanced degree in statistics. If you are struggling with a lack of productivity, you need to take a closer look at your daily habits. Being unproductive is nobody’s fault but your own. Here are some of the top tips that you can incorporate into your daily life to learn how to get more done and minimize distractions.

Tip #1 – Learn to Anticipate Yourself

When it comes to productivity, we are our own worst enemy in learning how to get more done and minimize distractions. According to an article from Fast Company, where they studied office worker distractions, they learned how many of the distractions involve different kinds of technologies, and they ended up creating even more of a force for interruptions and different places where we can focus our attention.

“We had observers go into the workplace and we timed people’s activities to the second. We’ve been to various workplaces, all high-tech companies. We wanted to look at information workers. We had observers shadow each person for three and a half days each and timed every activity to the second. If they pick up a phone call, that’s the start time. When they put the phone down, that’s the stop time. When they turn to the Word application, we get the start time and stop time. We found people switched these activities on average of every three minutes and five seconds”.

Roughly half of them are self-interruptionsThe good news is that internal disturbances are the only kind that you can control.

Learn to know your patterns and plan for these distractions.

Tip #2 – Send Out Busy Signals

Half of your distractions are external distractions that come in the form of email, people, phone calls, and chatter from other offices. If you want to stop these external distractions before they start you have to give out the right signals. If you utilize instant messenger, set yourself too busy and wear headphones, even if you aren’t listening to music. Providing subtle queues may seem passive aggressive, but they will also save you from annoying distractions. Avoiding upfront these types of distractions is the skill you will need to learn how to get ore done and minimize distractions.

Tip #3 – Make Technology Work for You

At times, technology may seem like an enemy, but technology can be your anti-distraction buddy. Turn off your email alerts, create an auto-response to text messages, and set your phone to go to voicemail. Block out chunks of time on your calendar as “busy.” Unless you are dealing with life and death situations at work, your coworkers will be able to manage without you for a few hours.

I encourage you to use tools like Rescue Time.

Your dashboard in rescue time shows you how your day is shaping up. You can use it to get a quick understanding of your time, see which types of activities you are doing the most, and gauge how productive you have been. You can rank and categorize activities so you can decide what’s important to you.

Each week, they will send you a handy summary email so you can easily keep tabs on how your days are shaping up and spot any big changes that are happening. You will learn how to get more done and minimize distractions.

 

Tip #4 – Learn to Say No

If you are already overloaded with work and you feel like you never get anything accomplished, then you need to learn to say no to new requests and projects. You can nicely let people know that you would love to help, but your plate is currently full. This will become a discipline of yours if you want to get more done and minimize distractions.

If you are starting to have more and more unproductive days, it’s time for you to determine your distractions and put a stop to them. By being proactive, silencing technology, and learning to say no, you will find that you will start to become more productive.

10 Life Lessons That Increased My Leadership Development Skills.

The older I get, the more I know life has more to teach me. Today’s post will not be an exhaustive list of important life lessons I have learned, but, it is an attempt to put some of the important life lessons down that have increased my Leadership Development Skills. As simple as these seem at first, I hope they will still be an investment in your life leadership skills.
Let’s begin and see where this list may take us.

1. No one can ruin your day without YOUR permission.

Too often we voluntarily give permission for people to ruin our days. Amazing how we can wake up and start off doing great and then all of a sudden someone says something wrong to us or treats us wrong, and our day will begin to slip downward. Once this slide start sometimes it tends to just keep going down and then we will give that authority of ruining our day to even more people and more situations.

Stop it! Just stop it!

Do not give that authority away. Keep your mind about you and determine that maybe things will happen to you, but you will make it through it all. If you have to go through it, why not keep your good attitude about yourself.

2.  Most people will be about as happy, as they decide to be.

Ever witnessed one of those people who, no matter what happens, they always see the glass as 1/2 empty? Maybe you have seen the other type of person who the glass is always 1/2 full? These are choices people are daily making. People make these types of choices all the time. Sometimes for me living with the 1/2 full choice has to be a minute by minute choice when things get really hard, but, the choice is still made that I will see life as 1/2 full and not empty.

It is still a choice to see life as full or empty So make it 1/2 full, this is a learned leadership skill that if developed people will want to follow the 1/2 full and not the 1/2 empty. Stay focused on the Amazing You and all the great skills, and abilities that God our creator has given us. Staying focused on just these things will keep us joyful and spreading the excitement everywhere.

3. Others can stop you temporarily, but only you can do it permanently.

Make a decision that nothing can stop you except yourself. Remember that you are pretty amazing.  

Often times before a person builds the momentum they need to build to accomplish the things they desire to accomplish, they will hit some obstacles that cause them to just stop. Enjoy this video as Brendon takes on 3 of those potential obstacles that maybe you have hit and are not overcoming yet or you have hit and overcame. 4. When your ship comes in. … Make sure you are willing to unload it.

Here is where I have found coaching to build successful leadership skills has paid off well. Meeting with others who are further along than myself in this journey of leadership and hearing their stories and life lessons are invaluable. My coaches and mentors have both met with me to prepare me for that time when opportunity knocks so that I will be ready. Preparing while the opportunity is knocking means you are already too late. It is important to be prepared before opportunity knocks.

5. If you don’t start, it’s certain you won’t arrive.

How you start something is crucial. Often times this can make or break a habit, a person, a routine, a system, well you get the idea. I feel so strongly about how we should start things I also blogged about it over here on How to start a productive day.

Often times people won’t start because they are paralyzed by the possibility of choosing the wrong direction or choice to go with. Andy Stanley has a podcast over at The Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast released 1/2/2019 titled “Building a Story brand“.  Go about 19:30 into the podcast and they start talking about this being paralyzed to make decisions. They then begin to drill down on how many do not have a vision for the future due to the fear of making the wrong decision or choices.

Take this one reason of being fearful of making a choice in a direction away from being why you may not be starting. Start, understand that more often than not there is not just one way or one right choice.

Now What?

This is only Part 1 of some Life Lessons that have helped develop my leadership skills. Look over these again and determine which one as simple as it may appear will you try and develop in your life? Write it down. Schedule times you will focus on it and find ways to strategically implement it. Find a mentor, coach or friend who you will ask them to hold you accountable.

The Amazing You

Blue Print

I am not big on, no, actually I am completely against using prescriptions or some of the other more known type of stuff to help increase a persons’ leadership development skill of productivity. Well, the Amazing You is just the thing I was looking for that would give me the maximum gains from the minimalist efforts. All without going against my belief in God, or taking prescriptions, or even having to twist my body like a pretzel.

The Struggle Is Real

For all of my 27+ years of being in leadership roles, I have always tried to be a human sponge. Reading everything possible, listen to every tape, CD, mp3, podcast etc that I could get my hands on. I knew that to become better it was going to take new habits to be created and those habits I was going to need to learn from others who I admired and saw results that they had accomplished.

The networking would start. I took from all the resources that I used one important lesson that all would mention which was the same, Networking. I started networking with everyone I could. It seemed that no matter how many I would network with, or how many books, or audio resources I would take in or conferences that I would attend, there always seemed to be “something” that was just out of reach for me to help connect all the dots.

What else could I do? The struggle was real and remained real for many years. I just kept trying to do whatever I would learn from all the resources and tried to have patience as I went through it all. I have no patience though but remained some-what patient for years still.

What else could I do that would help me to connect the dots so that I could become the leader that Christ desired for me to become? To fulfill the dreams that I had?

I Could Do Nothing

This is and always has been an option, just never truly an option for me. I am not one who likes the status quo and I refuse to allow it to settle into my life.

if I did nothing I would never become the Amazing Me that I just knew I was to become. This knowledge of what I wanted to become and knew I was to become but always felt like I was hitting a ceiling to my growth in my Leadership Development Skills still haunted me. So I would put my head down even more and read more, attend more conferences still, and network with even more people.

So doing nothing is no option.

Figure It Out Myself

Another idea was to keep trying to figure it out myself. This strategy had me wading through so many resources that I became a taker and not a giver. I become a consumer (because that is all the time I had which was devoted to taking in information) and not a contributor.

As long as I was mainly a consumer I always seemed to be missing out on some of my God-given excitement. I wasn’t meant to always just consume. For me, mainly being a consumer always made me feel like I was missing something and I thought everyone else had “it” except me.

I believe I learned this lesson, even more, when I began to coach. I started to see myself in many of those that I was coaching. They would hire me to give them what they were missing or felt they were missing. The more people I would coach and see this come across as a general them the clearer it became to me that I was doing the same thing with others. I would network because someone had different connections than me. I would read because the authors had more and better experience than myself. I would attend conferences because the speakers had the answers to my situations.

I was still trying to figure it out all by myself and not connecting the dots the way I need them to be connected. I would become oftentimes paralyzed by the wealth of information that I had.
